About this product

The "Cry of Pugadlawin," also known as the "Sigaw ng Pugad Lawin" or "Cry of Balintawak," refers to a significant event in Philippine history that marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule. It occurred on August 23, 1896, in Pugad Lawin (now part of Quezon City), Philippines.

Led by Filipino revolutionary leaders such as Andres Bonifacio, the event involved the tearing of community tax certificates (cedulas personales) or "cedulas" as a symbolic act of defiance against Spanish authority. Bonifacio, along with members of the Katipunan, a secret society advocating for Philippine independence, called upon Filipinos to rise up and fight for their freedom.

While the exact words uttered during the event are not precisely documented, the act of tearing the cedulas and the rallying cry of "Long live the Philippines!" became symbolic of the Filipino people's desire for independence and their readiness to fight against colonial oppression.

The Cry of Pugadlawin served as a catalyst for the Philippine Revolution, which eventually led to the declaration of Philippine independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898.
